2022

This project explores the idea of travelling through time and history that evokes past relationships and past activities that no longer happen in the present.

Inspired by 1920s street life and subculture, the work considers location and dislocation in both time and space, unfolding as a fictional journey centred on a young soldier who dreams of travelling from 1920 to 2022. Through this imagined narrative, the soldier’s thoughts and experiences quietly reflect contemporary realities, drawing parallels between the aftermath of World War I and the ongoing war in Ukraine.

The streets and older architecture of Leicester influenced the beginnings of this project. I researched activities from the past and how people dressed and behaved, characteristics that have been abandoned, partly because we live in an age where physical existence is less imperative, and our virtual existences are becoming more of the driving force.

This work is intended to be experienced with audio alongside the photographs. Through the audio, the soldier reflects on his struggle with mental health following World War I, adding an intimate and emotional layer to the work.
